We have a lot of Spanish speaking employees. What can we do to bridge the gap between our Spanish speaking employees and our English speaking employees?

This question is one that will continue to arise as our workforce continues to diversify. To bridge the gap and create a better bond with employees, there are a variety of ideas that can be implemented. Here is one suggestion.

Offer optional Spanish/English speaking and writing courses in conjunction with diversity training and development

  • Be sure that employees have a vested interest in the courses and that no backlash will follow if they do not participate.
  • Have the courses taught by a community college or a reputable source
  • Have flexible course offerings such as evening and weekend courses
  • To ensure convenience, make the courses available either on site in a vacant conference room or at a nearby school.
