Our company is opening an office abroad. What are some good resources for employment laws for different countries?

The following are good resources for information about employment laws in foreign countries.

  • Background notes. The U.S. Department of State provides country background notes. Those notes list information on geographic entities and international organizations and are updated periodically. Although background notes are not available for all countries, the existing ones are posted free on the Department of State’s web site at www.state.gov/www/background_notes/index.html.
  • Country profiles. Country Profiles are comprehensive reports from Employment Conditions Abroad (ECA) International for HR managers and expatriates. They contain in-depth background information about the country, including its history, political landscape, and economic background, as well as practical relocation information such as cost and availability of housing, education, and goods and services. The reports are updated annually and are available for 77 countries on a purchase basis. For additional information, contact ECA-Windham, 55 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10003; telephone (212) 647-0555; fax (212) 647-0494; or the web site at www.windhamworld.com.
  • Doing business in.… PriceWaterhouseCoopers publishes a series of books on doing business in various countries. You may purchase the publication about just a few countries, or you may purchase the whole series. For additional information contact Publications Department, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, telephone (800) 579-1646 or (212) 596-8000, fax (212) 790-6621, or the web site at www. pricewaterhousecoopers.com.
  • Employment law. International Labor and Employment Laws. This publication, by the American Bar Association, Timothy J. Darby and William L. Keller (1997), is available in the SHRMStore or by calling (800) 444-5006.
  • Web sites. The following web sites also provide information on the employment laws for different countries:
