About the Consulting Discipline

The Human Resources Consulting Discipline deals with the practice of delivering all aspects of human resource management as an external provider, and with the professional and business issues associated with operating such a practice, including client development, contracts, client management, etc. It also includes matters that focus on consulting careers, communications, legal and regulatory issues, technology, metrics, and outsourcing, as well as effective consulting practices and global consulting issues.

It does not include matters that focus on human resource consulting from the client’s perspective, which are encompassed within the Business Leadership Discipline under the Outsourcing topic, and within the Outsourcing topic in each of the other HR Disciplines as specifically relevant.

Training on legal and compliance issues seems like a natural fit for HR consultants. But how far can independent HR consultants take this training on their own before treading into legal areas that might be beyond their expertise?

Many HR consultants fail to leverage their reputation fully and to follow up on important contacts, among other things. Experts offer suggestions for making an HR consulting business stand out from the competition.

How much time should a consultant set aside for business development and marketing? Examine organizational life-cycle theory and other factors to make that determination.

The recession and resulting changes in staffing have put more importance on performance management. HR consultants have opportunities to get work helping employers improve these processes and their bottom lines.

Technology allows HR consultants to connect with collaborators and temporary or other types of workers or vendors in any part of the world. Smart consultants are reaping the benefits.

If you wish your consultancy to live beyond you and you do not have any existing bench strength, it is time to consider bringing on some reputable and experienced leadership.

Performance management (PM) is moving front and center as less emphasis is placed on hiring new staff, while more is being placed on utilizing the staff that are already on board effectively.

Building a successful consulting business “requires hard work, some skills and a measure of good luck.”

HR professionals must consider people issues when helping to decide whether to outsource call centers or keep them in-house.
