WHAT IS HR CERTIFICATION?

HR Certification creates a competitive advantage by enhancing your HR knowledge and skills. It is an achievement that opens the door to a new level of responsibility and endless opportunities, while helping thousands of HR practitioners stay current with their HR knowledge. Earning a Professional Certification opens doors to unlimited career opportunities and professional growth and highlights your commitment to your career as an HR professional. Certified HR professionals around the world have received job offers, promotions and respect from their peers.

What certifications are available?
Three certifications are available for candidates in India:
PHR® (Professional in Human Resources)
SPHR® (Senior Professional in Human Resources)
GPHR® (Global Professional in Human Resources)

Which certification exam is the best for me?
Your scope of work and depth of experience will determine which exam is best for you.

The Professional in Human Resources (PHR®) certification is designed for the HR professional who:
• focuses on program implementation
• has tactical/logistical orientation
• is accountable to another HR professional within the organization

The Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR®) certification is designed for the HR professional who: 
• designs and plans, rather than implements, HR policy
• focuses on the “big picture”
• has ultimate accountability in the HR department

The Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR®) certification is designed for the HR professional who: 
• designs organizational programs, processes and tools to achieve worldwide business goals
• understands the strategies of globalization versus localization of HR policies and programs
• designs organizational programs, processes and tools to achieve worldwide business goals

What are the benefits of getting certified?
Earning the PHR, SPHR, or GPHR credential demonstrates to you and your organization that you commit to a higher standard. When you become HR certified, you:

Is there an eligibility criterion? If yes, what is it?
Yes, there is an eligibility criteria. The exams test on experience-based knowledge, as given below:

PHR
SPHR
GPHR
Minimum 2 years of demonstrated HR experience
Minimum 4 years of demonstrated HR experience
Minimum 2 years of demonstrated HR experience with cross border responsibilities

Please note that the above criteria will change starting from the Spring 2011 testing window. The new eligibility criteria are as follows:

GPHR
1 year of demonstrated HR experience with a Master’s degree
4 years of demonstrated HR experience with a Master’s degree
2 years of demonstrated global HR experience with a Master’s degree
2 years of demonstrated HR experience with a Bachelor’s degree
5 years of demonstrated HR experience with a Bachelor’s degree
3 years of demonstrated professional HR experience (with 2 of the 3 being global HR experience) with a Bachelor’s degree
4 years of demonstrated HR experience with less than a Bachelor’s degree
7 years of demonstrated HR experience with less than a Bachelor’s degree
4 years of demonstrated professional HR experience (with 2 of the 4 being global HR experience) with less than a Bachelor’s degree


Where and when are the exams held?

The exams are administered in Prometric Testing Centers located worldwide. In India, the testing centers are in the following cities:
Ahmedabad    Allahabad    Bangalore
Calcutta          Chennai       Hyderabad
Mumbai          Gurgaon      Trivandrum

The exams are held two times in a year: -

Spring window:  May 1 – May 31 for GPHR®
May 1 – June 30 for PHR® and SPHR®
Winter window: December 1 – December 31 for GPHR®
December 1 – January 31 for PHR® and SPHR®

What is the best way to prepare for the exams?
We recommend using the SHRM Global Learning Systems (GPHR®) or SHRM Learning Systems (PHR® / SPHR®) to prepare for the exam. The SHRM Learning Systems have been designed by subject matter experts and include discussion questions, application exercises, and module exams to develop specific HR competencies. It consists of the following:
• Printed workbooks
• HR skills application and testing software via web
• Online Resource Center
• Flashcards and glossary of key terms

How much time should I spend studying for the exam?
SHRM recommends a minimum of 60 hours of study time to prepare for the exam.
